Hello All - I'm new and probably posting in the wrong place - sorry - please put me right!

We are researching my grandfather in law. We know that he was part of the LRDG but cannot find out much information. We've quite a few pictures and letters and know that he was a driver. He was definitely in Egypt and Syria (definitely here at Christmas 1943 as we have the 'Christmas Day order of events' in the 87 Sub Area) and was working alongside Paddy Mayne for at least some of the war.

Hi name was Thomas B Griffin no - 2989323

If anyone can point us in any direction I'd be hugely appreciative - we're drawing a blank!

Best wishes, Anna

Hi Anna
This is my first reply and also made my first posting today as well!
I dont know if this helps but a friend of mine - Bendan O'Carroll has written about 4 books on the LRDG and if you become stuck I can put you in touch with him. I think he has written specifically on the New Zealand side of the LRDG but he knows so much about the topic and visited Lybia etc and produced a DVD that he can probably help you.

Hi Anna,

Your first step would be to apply to the MoD for your grandfather-in-law's service record. The MoD is the ONLY custodian of WWII service Records...

Please shout out if you need any advice or assistance...

Great stuff - thanks so much!

Any ideas why his number doesn't come up on a 'forces war records' or ancestry.com search?

Brendan wasn?t in the military, just a historian and has just retired as a customs officer here in New Zealand. He specialises in the LRDG history but has also written other military books.

The answer is that despite their claims, they don't have access to WWII Service Records.
The MoD is the ONLY custodian of WWII Service Records and will remain so for a few years yet.
But, as family, you can apply to the MoD for a scan of his documents...
