Hi All

My father , John Morgan, served in the Commandos in WW2 and was, as far as I can understand part of No2 Special Service Brigade signals. He served in Italy , Yugoslavia, Albania and possibly Greece and mentioned to me his time in North Africa prior to the Sicily Invasion. He did mention his time at the landings in Anzio and at Monte Casino and I think this ties in with supporting No2 Commando
He passed away in 2016 and his memory in the later years was hazy, however I found this photograph of him (right hand side) and some friends , no idea where or when it was taken, someone on here may know those in the picture and i hope its provides some new information for some.

Welcome to the forum,

The Commando to the left of your father is Bryan Woolnough, he was also a Signaller in 2 Commando Brigade Signals.
The street sign in the top left hand corner suggests that the photograph was taken in Italy, are there any stamps on the reverse?

Good luck with your research
Guy

Hi.

Thanks for the info, the name rings a bell, i think he went to a reunion in the 1980s and mentioned that name.

The pic was glued to a album, however after a bit of effort I have discovered the rear of the pic says "Rome 1944" so that all ties in nicely, thanks again

Hi J. Morgan

My Dad (Roy Lewis) was in 2 Special Service Brigade Signals as well, covered the Salerno landings but was back in the UK January 1944.

I think that location is "Via Barberini 14" not far from Piazza Barberini in Rome

Regards Vic

Bryan Woolnough is in other photos within our Brigade Signals gallery so it would be worth looking through them to see if you can spot your Father. Some are post war reunions. I have added your photo to that gallery and it is currently on page 2 alongside the others from 2 Special Service Brigade (later renamed Commando Brigade) Signals. Here is a link to the Brigade Signals Gallery. Can you include your full name so I can credit it appropriately.

Hi John

The individual you identified as your Father was originally thought by the contributor to be Frank Lewis. This is in the credit and detail shown with the photo. As such can I ask you to register on the gallery and then add a comment to that photo with your own identification. You can register on the gallery here http://gallery.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/main.php?g2_view=core.UserAdmin&g2_subView=register.UserSelfRegistration&g2_return=%2FcdoGallery%2Fmain.php%3F

Ps. Good detective work on the location Vic.
