I acquired this FS knife some 10 yrs ago from a militaria fair in Birmingham.

At one stage I supplied photos and info to Paul McDonald who was undertaking some research on it.

We have never resolved why or when it was issued, why it has the secret screw handle which houses a small compartment and what that was for ?

I thought I would re open the debate on here to see if anyone can shed any further light upon this.

Cross Guard is stamped JP 42

I cannot see the point in having a concealed compartment as upon capture all weapons are confiscated anyway.

Hi Peter

Remembering the 'Commando Order' by Hitler in 1942 that all Commandos captured were to be immediately executed.

It has been suggested this knife may have been used by SOE or other agents behind enemy lines and the compartment housed a suicide pill.

The JP I believe stands for John Paisley a MFG in Scotland who seems to have undertaken private commissions of FS knives.

Its an intriguing piece.

John,

When closed and tightened up is it obvious the knife handle can be unscrewed? I appreciate Peter's comment on there being no point having a secret compartment on capture but it may contain sensitive information, maps, contacts etc but again I suppose under close inspection the captors would unscrew the compartment if it wasn't foolproof..

Hi Vlewis

I sent the knife to Swordsmith Paul McDonald of McDonald's Armour y Scotland and he commented how the workmanship is of a very high standard.

To answer your question ..No you cannot see the join as it were . It is invisible to the naked eye.

I'll try and post a photo.

Regards
