It is with much sadness that Guy Hudson advises us of the death on 24 September 2019 of Major John Russell Sturgis who served in 41RM Commando as an Acting Captain of 'B' Troop during the Normandy landings, later in the assault on Walcheren, and was awarded the Military Cross for his leadership and bravery on the night of the 14/15 February 1945 whilst part of a Fighting Patrol of 20 men at Kapelsche Veer across the River Maas that encountered heavy enemy opposition. He also received a Mention in Despatches.

Our condolences to all his Family and friends, and that includes his granddaughter who wrote an article about her grandfather which was published in the Daily Telegraph on Armistice day 2015 and can be read on this link: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/history/world-war-two/11986865/Armistice-Day-My-grandfathers-secret-World-War-Two-past.html

Rest in peace John.

Pete Rogers, son of LSgt Joe Rogers MM & nephew of TSM Ken McAllister. Both No2 Commando.
