Hi, I am the youngest of RW Summers ?s children, now 57, my Father sadly died in 1980, aged a mere 55. Apart from a couple of anecdotes, Dad never mentioned what he got up to during the war. I know he was J Group in Beach Commando. I and my brother and sister would like to find out more if possible, we?ve only just found out the he was awarded the DSC, for what we don?t know?
Would anybody be able to help. Thank you in advance.
James Summers.

Hi James

Here is a document that mentions your Father in 'J' Jig unit of the Royal Naval Beach Commandos:

Although I see your Father's name listed in our nominal roll online and note that we have D.S.C. I am not certain where the source for that award is from, and at present cannot find a reference to support it in London Gazettes. I am hoping one of our followers on this Forum may help with that.

Would you advise us of your Father's first and middle name ? If you have a photo of him please feel free to attach it in any reply.

I have found from the Navy Lists a Sub. Lieut. Raymond William Summers and note this entry on the BBC People's War archive where your Father is mentioned briefly

Was your only knowledge of the award of the D.S.C. from our entry ?
