Hello everyone, I'm looking for any information regarding my great uncle, Sgt Ashton Usher Hey PO/X106797.

He served in 41 Commando and was killed on D-day. He is buried in Hermanville and my parents have visited his grave a number of times, they are hoping to be there for the D-day memorials in June.

We know very little about how he was killed, or his service before joining 41 Commando so any information would be very helpful. I have read that 41 Commando took part in the invasion of Sicily prior to D-day but I do not know if he was involved.

Hi Matt

Unfortunately the only information we have on your great uncle Sgt Ashton Usher Hey R.M. is in our Roll of Honour entry for him here: http://www.commandoveterans.org/AshtonHey41RMCommando

The CWGC entry is here: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2337161/hey,-ashton-usher/

If any of your Family have a photo of your great uncle we would be delighted to add it to our Archive. You can either attach it to a reply on this forum message or email me a copy of it.

You could apply for a copy of his service record if you wished to do so. Content varies on the information found in service records - some very detailed, some not so detailed. But worth doing. If the nearest next of kin applies a full copy will be provided, anyone else will only get a transcript with limited detail. The MOD charge £30 for this service and are the only ones who provide this, despite what some pay websites might suggest. Here is how to apply: http://www.commandoveterans.org/ServiceRecords
