Robert Tomlin,RMC

Hi looking for any info on a relative of mine, he was in the Royal marine Commandos and participated on the invasion on the 6th of June 1944,D-Day,but have no further information,ive looked on all the different RMC web sites and other places on the internet but so far i haven't found him.

Are you able to verify middle initial and the last known address/area?

Excellent yes that?s him,next question would be what are the medal bars for above his Brest pocked?
And where could I find his army number? Tried a few sites but they want credit card details.!

1939-45 Star
Africa Star
Italy Star
France and Germany Star
Defence Medal
War Medal

41 R.M. Commando were involved in the invasion of Sicily and landings at Salerno, Italy. Looking at the medal ribbons it would suggest that Robert was involved in these campaigns, in addition to Normandy and other operations in N.W.E.

All would be confirmed by obtaining a copy of his service records.

Thats great to know i will pass the info onto my mother who's asking.

It would be great to get his service record as well, how can we check thats his correct service number?

The only custodian for WWII Service Records is the MoD and you /your mother can apply for a scan of his original service records.
This will cost £30 one off payment and you will need a copy of his death certificate - available to order on-line from Gov.Uk.

Don't worry about getting his service number right - as long as you know his Date of Birth then that will be enough for the Records Office to conduct their search.

It sounds as if you have already experienced the On-Line genealogy sites, such as Ancestry or Forces War Records etc., which claim to have WWII service records - but it costs a lot of money to find out that they don't! Stay well clear of them - as I said the MoD are the only custodians of WWII records and will be for a few years yet...

Yes those other ancestry sites claim they have all the information but i was sceptical to say the least, will let you know how we get on.
