Hi Tony,

Welcome to the CVA Website & Forums.
Here is a link to the No.12 Commando page from which you can follow the links and read up about No.12. Commando.

Here is a link to the No.12 Commando Album in our Gallery - have a look through and hopefully you'll spot your grandfather (please let us know if you do so the photo can be annotated accordingly).

No.12 Commando was disbanded in Oct 1943 and it's personnel were generally dispersed amongst the other Commando Units. To find out more about your grandfather's service, I would recommend you apply to the MoD to obtain a scan of his original, handwritten service records.

Should you wish to do this, I can point you in the right direction

3601013 Sergeant Thomas Gibson Metcalfe, Border Regiment attached to No. 12 Commando, received a Mention in Despatches after Operation Cartoon.

Recommendation
Operation Cartoon.
Sergeant Metcalfe was with a detachment of the Special Service Brigade which landed at Sagvaag, Norway, on the night of the 23/24th January 1943. This NCO led a party of eleven men which was responsible for the complete destruction of the Transformer at the Pyrite mine. Sgt. Metcalfe led his party with determination and performed his task with great thoroughness. His judgement was quick and accurate, and his leadership instilled enthusiasm into all detailed for this task.

Hi again Tony

We had your Grandfather's name listed in our No. 12 Commando nominal roll, however I have now added an archive entry for him regarding his award. That can be viewed below. If you post a photo of him, and/pr his colleagues we can add that to our Gallery if from his time in 12 Commando. I can also add a photo to the archive entry.
