I would hazard a guess your man was in 45 possibly Aden which was late sixties, Northern Ireland would be seventies. Which ties in with RM number. It was in the seventies that the RM service number changed from RM to the PO series of numbers, my number was in the nineties was PO53901J. Google will give you some leads on 45. Or James Ladd who wrote a history of the marines.
