Frank 'The Midge' Stephens, ex 27 Stranges Battery Royal Artillery has contacted me to see if any from 42 Commando who were on HMS Bulwark around this time remember him or the operations at Kuwait or Yemen. Frank adds this

Did you know that a detachment from 27 Strange's Battery was the forerunner of 29 Commando Regt RA. We joined 42 Commando on HMS Bulwark in Singapore. We were stationed at St Barbara Bks, Tampin, Malaya.

Each of the four 4.2 Mortars put 150 rounds on an island just off the New Territories. The Barrels had to be cooled with water. We never knew the reason for it, just followed fire orders. We entered Kuwait City during a curfew. We then moved on to the Yemen, through the Gulf of Aden. Our fighter escort was 2 Hunters from RAF Khormaksar and 2 Sea Vixens from a carrier. Another escort ship was a guided missile frigate or destroyer we called Ambrosia.

If you know were part of this deployment please add you comments here. If you knew Frank contact me and I will put you in touch.

Pete Rogers, son of LSgt Joe Rogers MM & nephew of TSM Ken McAllister. Both No2 Commando.
God and the Soldier, all men adore, In time of danger and not before.
When the danger is passed and all things righted, God is forgotten, and the Soldier slighted.

Perhaps Frank could try enlisting as a guest on OAMAAM. There may be someone on there that did the trip that he mentions.

I took the one less traveled by,
