Hello
I am very new to this as I have only recently discovered my true paternal grandfather was Frank J E Goodenough who was s corporal in the 45 RM Commando KIA in Normandy 11/6/44. I have recently visited his grave in Ranville over the Easter holidays and have the attached photo of him. Other than that I have no other information, would appreciate pointers from anyone here where is the best place to search out further information about him
Many thanks in advance

The service number indicates he was in the Plymouth division. Send me your email address and I?ll forward the official history of 45 commando.

Sean.
Cpl Goodenough is listed in the Roll of Honour 1943- 1945 as Corporal F.J.E Goodenough. KIA 16/06/1944 France. This is in the book FOUR FIVE. The story of 45 Commando Royal Marines. Written by David Young. You can obtain access to his records from Whale Island. There is a thread on this site on how to obtain the records. I?m sure Pete Rodgers will be able to offer advice when he sees this post.
Keep us posted. As it helps others find relatives and track movements. I found my grandad on here also in 45 Commando.
Regards.

Hi Sean
Thank you very much for providing the photos. Craig is correct in that your Grandfather is mentioned in the ROH of that book, however he is also mentioned on Page 30 of a small book written just after the end of the war called The Story of 45 Royal Marine Commando. Several such books were written on units of the RM Commandos who served in WW2. I believe that is the book Craig was referring to as the official history of the Unit.
I have added the photo to our ROH entry for Corporal Goodenough and included some of the detail on there from the 45RM Commando War Diary and the book. Here is a link to our archive entry for your Grandfather : http://www.commandoveterans.org/FrankGoodenough45RMCommando
I will also add the photo to our Gallery. Do you have a higher resolution copy at all ?
As far as further research goes, the family could apply for a copy of his service record. if the nearest next of kin applies a full photo copy of the record will be provided, otherwise a transcript with limited detail will be provided. Some have more information on them than others.
How to apply can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/request-records-of-deceased-service-personnel
Regards
Pete
