An extremely generous veteran of 5 Troop, No5 Cdo, Mr Billy Moore, gaveme two original photographic prints this weekend.
My intention is to restore them and return them with enlarged copies to Billy but first I would like to put some names to faces - I do realise how difficult that can be as I think my father is on the first photo but I'm not 100% sure...

No5 disembarked in Bombay on 20 Dec 1943.
09 Jan '44. Green puggri & Combined Ops sign had to be affixed to slouch hats...
Billy said that two days later the commandos threw the slouch hats away!

You'll notice a mix of light and dark berets...
The faded green berets belonged to the 'old' commandos whereas the dark ones belonged to the 'new' commandos that were replacing casualties.

Hi I have only just found this site and am sure that my dad is in both of the photo's. His name is Charles ( Charlie ) Patrick Edmonds, from Dublin and I am sure that he has both of these pictures himself.

Hope this helps in some way

Hi Greg,
Welcome aboard the CVA forum.
Presumably your dad was in No5 Cdo? And, if you think he is on both photos, I would assume that he must have been in 5 Troop?

As my father was in 5 Troop, No5 commando, I would be extremely interested in seeing any photos that he has posted on the forum and/or in the Gallery - especially if he can put a name to any faces.

As you can see, the second photo (with berets) is badly damaged and I do intend to restore it for the veteran who kindly gave it to me; however, if your father's copy is in better condition it would be far easier and more accurate if I was able to make a copy of that.

So far I have only met one veteran who served in the same troop as my father and that is Billy Moore. Billy, a great character, was Capt Kerr's (the Troop Commander) driver.

How would I find out which troop my grandfather was in in 5 commando? I have his service records but cannot see anything about a troop number?

Hi all,

My late father was in 5 Cdo 5 Troop. His name was Walter Jones and there is a thread on page 12/13 of 'Looking for Information' with pictures of him. Unfortunatley I don't have any further information or pictures. I do have his demob case though!

Hope you find what you're all looking for,

hope this is useful
