It is with much sadness that we advise you of the recent passing on the 31st January 2018 of Jimmy Lawson of No. 11 Commando. Jimmy was aged 97.

Jimmy was a Piper in the Gordon Highlanders and volunteered immediately after the formation of No.11 Commando when he heard they were seeking a Piper. He did most of his training on the Isle of Arran where they were billeted at Lamlash. He was part of HQ Troop of No.11 Commando and embarked with them to the Middle East as part of Layforce. On the 9th June 1941 he took part in the Litani River landings on this occasion armed with a rifle rather than his pipes. Their landing craft hit a rock and they were forced to disembark into 6 feet of water. When 11 Commando was disbanded Jimmy went to 13th Corps Signals whilst awaiting transfer to the RASC.

Jimmy's war service was from 1939 -1946. He was then recalled to service for Korea and served there from August 1950 - November 1951. After leaving the Army Jimmy worked as a coal miner in the 1950's up until 1968

He was a former member of the Commando Association, and a member of both the Korean Veterans Association and the Commando Veterans Association. He was well respected by those he served with and most especially by those within the No 11 Commando family.

Our most sincere condolences to his daughter and all his family and friends.

Jimmy's funeral will take place on the 21st February 2018 at 10.15am at Kirkcaldy Crematorium, Fife.

Rest in peace Jimmy.

I have been in touch with the local Royal British Legion who will have representation at Jimmy's funeral on the 21st February 2018 at 10.15am at Kirkcaldy Crematorium, Fife. I will be attending. Not sure if any Commando Veterans live locally and able to attend.

Rest in peace Piper Jimmy Lawson. It was a privilege to have spent time in his company - a man who imbued the commando spirit.
