My grandad was commando Sgt Leonard Eldridge who was on the ML 447 in the Operation Chariot, St Nazaire raid.
My mum was in utero and born in May (He died in March).
We don't have a picture and she knows nothing about him.
Any information very gratefully received.

Hi Jo ( I hope that is correct)
Whilst we know what his troop and commando unit were, and the motor launch he travelled to St Nazaire aboard, I believe you may be looking for something more, so my advice to you and your mother would be to apply for a copy of his service record which may tell you a little bit more. How to do so can be found half way down the page on this link to our Website Content and Research Advice page.
If the immediate next of kin applies then a full copy will be provide, otherwise a transcript with limited information only will be supplied.
Whilst your Grandfather has not as yet been identified in a photo within our gallery, we do know he was in 2 troop and the links below will show you photos of 2 troop prior to the St Nazaire raid:
http://gallery.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/units/2/2+Troop/CNV00004.jpg.html
and
http://gallery.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/units/2/2+Troop/CNV00005.jpg.html
We cannot be sure your Grandfather is in this photo as some of the men were away from their troop at times when training for specific roles in the raid.
I hope someone else has more. I know sometimes local newspapers reported the deaths and printed photos.
Good luck and keep us informed on how your research goes.

Hi Jo,
Good news! I've just been contacted by Karen Eldridge who can put you in contact with Leonard's sister!
I've sent her email to you by PM.
In the meantime she has identified Leonard on a couple of photos in our Gallery...
http://gallery.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/units/2/2+Troop/CNV00005.jpg.html
Leonard is on this and an almost identical group photo of 2 Troop, No.2 Cdo.
I have enlarged him for you as separate files - attached...
