Dear all,
I'm Sergeant Fred Darts' grand-daughter. They called him FREDDY and they also called him the gentle giant of Bedford. He was mentioned in "Storm from the Sea" by Peter Young. Apparently he saved another soldier by carrying him on his shoulder. I was wondering if anyone has heard of him. I've looke through many of the photos but can't seem to see him. Thank you Luisa

Hi Luisa,

Thank you for your post and welcome to the CVA Website & Forums.

We have indeed heard of your grandfather and we have him listed in the No.3 Commando Nominal Roll. http://www.commandoveterans.org/3CommandoNomRollD%20-%20H

Sgt Freddy Darts was awarded the DCM for his action during Operation Husky - The Sicily Landings.

See attached the supplement of the London Gazette where his award was gazetted.

Hi Luisa,

You told me that your grandfather was captured at Sicily - attached is the PoW record for him.

Camp No. 18A indicates he was held in Stalag XVIIIA at Wolfsberg (Kärnten).

RO 21 was the Infantry Record Office, Warwick.
