Hi All

I am looking for any reference at all that mentions Commando service in regard to the above named who died during the war believed shot whilst attempting to escape. Also anything that details when and where he was captured.

326038 Trooper Jack Brown, Yorkshire Hussars Royal Armoured Corps (RAC), died 8th July 1944 aged 26, buried Prague War Cemetery.

I have a tracer card from the RAC giving the following information:

"X"1 list Depot Commando Training and Holding Unit 2/2/41 (Yorkshire Hussars 6/41)
Reported missing believed POW ( Cas. 133/41 )
Prisoner of War ( Cas. 215/41 )
Reported died whilst POW (while escaping) 8/7/44 ( Cas.154/44 )

The CWGC have accepted these tracer cards I am pleased to say in respect of four others that we brought to their attention in respect of lack of Commando service shown.

If you find anything please scan and send to me (via email or by posting on here) a copy of the document, it's title, and any official reference to it.

Thanks.

Some additional information.

On the 24th July 1945 it was announced that he had received a posthumous MiD "in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the field."

Pete,
Brown is listed as Yorkshire Hussars R.A.C on all the war office casualty lists.

WO 417/27, listed as missing Crete 2/6/1941

WO361/1937, Prisoner of War, action logs of deaths and woundings; books 1-3, gives confirmation that he was shot while escaping.

Hi Guy

Thanks. From what the Tank Museum tell me the Yorkshire Hussars were not in Crete at the time of his being reported missing. They were in Palestine. Thus if WO 417/27 state Missing Crete it adds to the possibility he was with Layforce in Crete.

Pete
