I am looking for more information about my Grandad's service during ww2... I know he saw service in what was Ceylon, and I believe he was a PT instructor, much more than that I don't know, only I have his service record, and from that I see that he served on various ships (or shore posts? .. I have a postcard he sent from HMS Ganges) but I believe he saw some sort of serious action around Sept 44 as he was a marine from4/40 till 7/43, then Sargent in 8/44 then during September 44 was raised in 3 days to company sargeant major (and he told me acting major).. my logic being that in early sept, his immediate superiors must have been killed and him subsequently rapidly promoted? Is that how it worked...

I would be grateful for any insight into his experiences, only wished I had asked more when he was still with us...

'Ships' mentioned include gosling, ukussa, Lanka rajaliya ...

Thank you
Sarah

Hi Sarah

I am not sure if you know but unlike today in WW2 not all Royal Marines were Commandos. Some of the names you mentioned were shore based establishmenst rather than ships:

HMS Gosling - http://www.royalnavyresearcharchive.org.uk/MONABS/Gosling-1.htm#.WR9X77pFxPY

HMS. Ukussa, Royal Naval Air Station at Katukurunda, Ceylon;

HMS Lanka, Shore base at Ceylon;

HMS Rajaliya, a jungle Royal Naval Air Station - http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205187970

HMS Ganges, a Royal Navy Training Establishment. They have an association - http://hmsgangesassoc.org/
and a Museum - https://www.hmsgangesmuseum.com/

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete, thanks for your reply, no I don't know anything really, Grandad didn't talk to much about ww2, only to wear lots of cardigans even in the warmest of weather, whilst bemoaning that he'd never been warm since he left Ceylon in '46!

I understand he was on mainly shore based posts. I also believe he was a PT instructor.

I am most interested if then he saw 'action' and why he would have rose in ranks on three consecutive days?

Thank you for your information about the bases..

I am grateful for your time, thank you...
