Hi All
I was hoping if someone could please assist me with some information concerning 3776911 S/Sgt Herbert Horatio Austin. According to his paperwork, Austin served in the RAF in the mid 1930's the joined the King's Regiment in 1940. On his Embarkation Card his unit is listed as S.S Group, Tac. H.Q and on his discharge paperwork it is listed as Holding Operational Commando. However his 'Old Comrade's Association of the Special Service Bridge' book has his unit listed as 2SBS. I have attached pictures of these along with a small photo of S/Sgt Austin in uniform in Scotland with what appears to be insignia on his sleeve (S 'dagger' S). Any assistance that can be provided would be immensely appreciated!!
Thanks again,
Paul

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the CVA Website & Forums.
At the moment, the only thing I can offer is information on the formation patch he is wearing on his shoulder...
This is the No.2 Commando badge as seen in the photo I have attached.

Hi Paul
There was a Sgt Austin in 2 SBS having joined them on their formation on the 2nd April 1942. He is named on a limited nominal roll for 2 SBS here :
Partial nominal roll for 2 SBS
and also on Sheet V of this document about 2 SBS. If you read the document it does detail how many of the men came to the unit from Army Commando units:
Special Boat Section formation to Feb 1944
In the early days of No 2 Commando several men went off on different specialist operations. He may well have been one of those men. Have you actually got a transcript of his full Army Service Record ?
Pete

Hi Pete
Thats greatly appreciated thanks mate! Unfortunately I only have his medals, the photo which I posted and a few other documents including his "Soldiers Release Book Class A" which has minimal info but has his unit on discharge listed as Holding Operational Commando.
Is there somewhere/somehow I can access/request a transcript of his full army service record?
Thanks again for your help.
