It is with much sadness that we advise you of the recent death after a short illness of Gwynfor Bowen, aged 97, who served in No.1 Commando. Our sincere condolences to his son David and all of Gwynfor's family and friends.
David Bowen adds
"He joined up in May 1939, and the following year volunteered for the Second Independent Company. He served in Norway, France and North Africa.
At one stage in the war he was billeted in Irvine. This is where he met my mother, she was born in Wales but moved to Scotland before the war. They were married for 72 years and stayed in Irvine throughout their married lives.
He still remained a very proud Welshman and never lost his accent.
In No.1 Commando he was a radio operator, he told me that it was very useful that he and another operator were Welsh speakers... no need for codes.
After illness he finished his service in the Welch Regiment serving with the Court Martial Division.
He was born in Llanelli, South Wales on 24th November 1919. "
Rest in peace Gwynfor.
