In the early part of January 1945 3 Commando Brigade were involved in operations in Burma in the Akyab region and the Myebon Peninsula. On the 22nd January operations began that would result in the capture of Kangaw and Daingbon. From the 29th January onwards the battle commenced for hill Pt. 170 in Kangaw, the many Commando casualties from the ferocious fighting that took place included Lt George Knowland of No 1 Commando who would be posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry.

God and the Soldier, all men adore, In time of danger and not before.
When the danger is passed and all things righted, God is forgotten, and the Soldier slighted.
