FLUSHING - On Saturday, October 29th, the annual commemoration of the liberation of Vlissingen. During the ceremony in the memorial area Uncle Beach in Orange Mill in Flushing reading students Scheldemond the names of 69 soldiers and 48 civilians. They arrived between 1 and November 4, 1944 killed in the fighting for the liberation of Vlissingen. It is the organization of the commemoration managed an information sign, placed in 1994, reflected. This now has a place in the memorial area.

On 3 November the 72 years since Flushing was liberated from the Germans. 'Uncle Beach' codenamed the Vlissingen beach was east of the Oranjemolen where the first troops landed at Walcheren on November 1, 1944. After a fierce battle Flushing was released on November 3, 1944.
The scene of these historical events is the commemoration Uncle Beach area. Which has received over the years form, but is not finished yet, Hans Koeman told the Committee Liberation Flushing. "We would still like to make a plaque with the names of 69 fallen soldiers. For this we are still looking for sponsors. "

In the memorial area are recently four interlocking basalt blocks and two information panels are new. The sign on the landing was in 1944 hit in 2014 from view when the Landing Monument Commandoweg moved to the memorial area. "I've called several times by veterans from England who asked where the sign left," said Koeman. He found it back in a municipal warehouse and at the commemoration on 29 October together with a second information panel restored the memorial area alive. The second sign is The Exhortation read in English, French and Dutch. The Exhortation is the poem that veterans all over the world read their killed comrades.
On two of the four basalt is a text reading landing in English, French and Dutch.

The ceremony on Saturday, October 29th starting at 13.00. Include the Flushing Mayor Bas van den Tillaar, representatives of countries that participated in the Battle of the Scheldt and organizations of war veterans and resistance lay wreaths. Students from CSW Bestevaer help. "I hope there will be one or two veterans," said Koeman. Many of them are now deceased or unable to travel because of their age. "A veteran of 96 years old tries to be present in any case."
Flushing Royal Harmony Our Pleasure and Inter Scaldis Pipes and Drums provide the music during the ceremony. Students from Scheldemond the names of the 69 soldiers and 48 civilians who died. If the weather permits aircraft also fly again.
