NEW BOOK. AFGHANISTAN - Britain's War in Helmand.
In 2001, Britain sent troops to Afghanistan to support the multi-national Coalition that backed the Northern Alliance assault against Taliban. Then in 2002, 45 Commando RM, as well as elements of 29 Commando Regt RA and 59 Indp Commando Squadron RE deployed to Bagram to support the US 10th Mountain Division in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. In Kabul 2 PARA mounted a peace support operation as part of NATO's new operation, named ISAF. Four years later Prime Minister Tony Blair agreed to send British troops into Helmand in a move to support ISAF's expansion of security and development in southern Afghanistan. When the first combat troops arrived in early 2006 they expected to face a ?robust peace support mission?. Instead they faced a ?bloody face-to-face? battle? with the Taliban, which lasted for eight years. This new book documents the war in ten chapters. The battles in Sangin, the operations into Nad-e-Ali and the sacrifice made by UK forces. In 2014 the war ended and British troops left Helmand. Today, they remain in Kabul training Afghan's future Army officers, in what many hope will be the UK's legacy in the country.
