Does anyone know of a painting by a No Commando, Brian V. Bartlett, of an action involving another No 1 Commando, LSgt Albert Baker DCM. I am trying to find where this painting may have ended up. It depicts the gallant action in North Africa of the then LCpl Baker.

I have sent this reply to the enquirer to date

"The painter by the sound of it is Trooper Brian V. Bartlett who served in No 1 Commando and also in Commando Brigade HQ. Brian in the immediate years after the war was the Hon Sec. of the Bristol Branch of the original Association. He then emigrated to New Zealand and lived in the Taupo region. His death was announced in their Sept 2002 Newsletter.

The Commando depicted is most likely to be 2614133 Lance Sergeant Albert Baker DCM, Grenadier Guards attached to No 1 Commando. As a Lance Corporal he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his "gallant and distinguished services in North Africa." He was actually recommended for awards twice during the same period of extended action 23rd February to 4th March 1943. The first recommendation was for the Military Medal for his actions on the 23rd February. The second was for the DCM for his actions from the 26th February onwards. Of the two recommendations he was subsequently only awarded the higher award of the DCM. Sadly on the 22nd January 1945 aged 28 he was killed whilst No 1 Commando were operating in the Kangaw and Myebon regions of Burma. He is buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery."

Hi Pete

I have got two scanned copies of newspaper articles from 1998 that cover this action, that Idris Jones owned, one of the articles actually has a copy of the painting included.
I have tried to attach copies of these two images with this message however it doesn't seem to be working, perhaps the files are too large, so I will send them to you via an email (hopefully).

Cheers Andy
