Hi Joe,

Welcome to the forums.

Can you provide some more information about your Granddad's Royal Marine service, eg place names, share a photo etc ? It might spark off something.

Do you know who awarded the medal in 1992 ?

Could it be this ?
The Malta George Cross Fiftieth Anniversary Medal is a commemorative medal created by the government of Malta and awarded by, or in the name of, the President of Malta. Established on 17 January 1992, it could be awarded to individuals who met the specified requirements of service and made application for award of the medal by 15 April 1994.

This is probably unrelated, but are you sure of the year 1992, as in 1990 a "Commemorative Medallion" was created

by the Commando Association for the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the Commandos. The celebrations took place between the 31st August and the 2nd September 1990.

Hi Mark,
I think it was the fiftieth anniversary malties medal I have looked it up and found the photo of it. I believe he was in 44 commando? Do you know if they were in Malta at this time? I posted some copies of his service number on here before maybe a year ago and got some good info back😄 but I just wondered what he would have got the medal for?

Joe is referring to his previous posting.

To really know, we need to find some evidence linking your Granddad's service and Malta at that time ideally official documentation, otherwise we are just guessing!

The Siege of Malta was
11 June 1940 ? 20 November 1942
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Malta_%28World_War_II%29

While

No. 44 (Royal Marine) Commando was formed on 1 August 1943, under command of Lieutenant Colonel F C Horton

From your previous post it looks like in the Siege of malta period your grandad was at the following

7th July - 7th Aug 1942: Royal Marines initial training at Lympstone

1st Sept - 30th Dec 1942: Portsmouth Division

Perhaps the 50th anniversary medal covers later service in Malta ?
