What the ever modest Paul MacDonald has not told many people is that, on the descent from Ben Nevis, the group from Commando 'D', consisting of Paul MacDonald, Mike Smith and David Stokes came across a group of Dutch Commando Veterans who were descending from Ben Nevis in the dark.
One of the Dutch party, an ex-Commanding Officer, stumbled and fell over the edge of the path, tumbling, cartwheeling & 'bouncing' for about 100 ft.
Paul & Mike said it was the worst thing they'd ever seen.
Fearful of what they might find, Paul & Mike immediately scrambled down to the casualty and were amazed to find the 72 year old still alive. The third member of Commando 'D', David Stokes, a short way behind Paul & Mike, said that all he saw was his friends throwing themselves over the edge and so, without a second thought, he followed them...

The Emergency Services were alerted and Paul, Mike & David carried out essential First Aid until Mountain Rescue arrived, then helped recover the Veteran off the Ben...
'The Flying Dutchman', as he is now called, was evacuated to Glasgow Hospital where Paul visited him om the 13 November, and reported that this extremely lucky guy is already able to walk short distances - despite having broken his neck

What a tough and resilient old soldier.

Well done to the lads of Commando 'D'.
