Hi
Another day at the National Archives, and yet another query.
File WO 218/ 79 is titled Army Commando, and covers the period Sept 1945 - Jan 1946.
On the front cover it states Army Commando - 2 Cdo Bde, 2 Cdo BDE is then crossed thro!.
The CO is a Lt Col MR Allen.
It appears to be based at Oakridge Camp,BASINGSTOKE.
The diary reads as the run down of the cdo before final dispersal.
What was this unit ,its function and was it Army or Royal Marine.
Thanks
Graham

By their deeds they shall be known

Hi Graham

2 Commando Brigade...are you asking what this was? From late 1943 onwards four Special Service Brigades later renamed Commando Brigades were formed consisting of individual Commando Units grouped together, but keeping their identity, and working often independently of each other within each Brigade. Both Army and Royal Marine Commando Units formed these four Brigades. Each would have a Brigade HQ so it would make sense that after VJ day these Brigade HQ's were no longer needed as the men were being demobbed, and both Army and most RM Commando Units were to be later disbanded

Was this what you were looking for?
