A WAR veteran who survived an infamous raid on a German-held port in 1942 has been immortalised in a portrait and a poem.
Last August the News told the story of former Royal Marine Commando, Corporal Alan Saunders, who tried to swim from Dieppe in France to Portsmouth following a disastrous assault in the Second World War.

There are only about 15 of the original 40 Commando unit, which carried out the Dieppe Raid, still alive.

From the previous article referenced in article above

"I decided the only thing for it was to swim back to Portsmouth so that's what a few of us did. We were still being shot at, so we swam for 30 minutes then had a five-minute break and started again.

Vic Lewis has asked me to post this link regarding the passing of Cpl Alan Saunders, 40 RM Cdo.

A remarkable man to the end, Alan celebrated his 92nd birthday with a ride on the World's fastest zip wire - despite having lost his sight.

Rest In Peace.

Nick
