It is with much sadness that we inform you of the recent death on the 24th August 2012 of George Howat. George was a Bombardier attached to No.4 Commando from the Royal Artillery, and he took part in the Dieppe raid.
Rest in peace George

Email from Fiona Howat, daughter of George:
Dear Mr Murray
I would like to notify you of the death of my father, George C Howat, at the age of 98. He was in No.4 Commando during the 2nd World War and after the war, was for many years, Secretary of the Ayrshire Branch of The Commando Association, helping to organise activities such as the Christmas parties for the children of Commandos in Troon and the annual visit to the Commando Memorial in Spean Bridge for the Armistice Day.As Secretary of the branch, he attended the unveiling of the Memorial and was presented to the Queen Mother after the actual ceremony. He also made a point of participating in the Armistice Day Parade in Fort William for many years, as the Commandos received so much support from the people of Lochaber during their training at Achnacarry.
He spent the last 12 years of his life in a nursing home in Patna,Ayrshire, suffering from dementia and I believe he was visited there by a representative of the Commandos.
Yours sincerely
Fiona M Howat
