hi Folks

This is quite interesting. The scabbard on this 3rd pattern has been adapted very well and has an extra frog.

It has been suggested 'Para' and fitting for a 'Sam Browm'

Im still not sure.

regards

Hi John,

I'm wondering whether it's something as innocent as a modification to provide a retainer for the grip because the original frog elastic strap or pop retainer went missing? However, a replacement scabard would of been even simpler so I guess there's some other rationale for it?

Interesting though, haven't see one like that before.

Hi Vic

Interestingly the elastic retainer is broken.........but it still seems a bit elaborate for that.

It fits a Sam Brown ..........spot on........but the knife in the scabbard still hangs 'free'.......so I reckon it would be a bit clumsy to use in that way.....unless it was for dress purposes?

The seam tabs are also still present.........so I don't know.......but a nice piece.

regards

I agree with Vic, that due to the broken elastic, the scabbard is simply placed in a bayonet frog. But what is more interesting is the frogs country of origin.

Hi John, no ideas at all, all similar frogs are made of webbing. Have looked at all? WW1 & 2 frogs from every country with no joy, but this frog looks original, it might help if there were any markings or numbers on the item, will look further into it and let you know.

Hi Kevin

Yes that's the first thing I always look for............I cant find any marks or numbers at all on it.

Its well made of good leather.......and is fitted really well.

Its a mystery.

regards

John

I hope that this solves the mystery, try this, Remmington P17 bayonet frog, issued to British home guards during WW2. Look at this link to compare.

Cheers
