Here is a link to a photo of Cpl Roy Montague Smith 43RM Commando 'A' Troop - Sugar Section who was killed in action on the 18th April 1945. Included are some detail from his letters home just before he died:

Pete Rogers, son of LSgt Joe Rogers MM & nephew of TSM Ken McAllister. Both No2 Commando.
God and the Soldier, all men adore, In time of danger and not before.
When the danger is passed and all things righted, God is forgotten, and the Soldier slighted.

Our thanks to Roy Smith, nephew of Corporal Roy Montague Smith, who has provided letters received after his uncle was killed in action. They can be read in his album located in the 43RM Cdo gallery. Particularly poignant is a line in the letter to his brother on the 13th April 1945 written 5 days before his death:

There is also part of an earlier letter to his brother where he describes the death and injuries to some of his fellow Commandos
