1st pattern FS Knife

If any of you are on the lookout for a first pattern FS knife there's one up for auction in a 2-day sale at Mellors & Kirk Auctioneers in Nottingham on the 1st and 2nd of March. If you can't attend the auction it's possible to leave a commission bid but you have to make your own arrangements to collect it or have it collected. The estimate is £150-£250!

Lot number 891: A World War Two Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife and sheath first pattern, by Wilkinson Sword Co Ltd London with etched ricasso and two inch crossguard, it and the hilt nickel plated, length of blade 17.5cm, the leather sheath with wings, plated press stud and chape. In good entirely original condition, the blade long protected by a film of petroleum jelly, the grip with some old ingrained black marks and dirt, the sheath in good condition with dent on the front of the chape. Issued to a British commando during World War II and now offered by his son

Do they say who the commando was?

They don't say who the Commando was unfortunately but other lots from the same vendor include a German M1935 reissued Luftwaffe helmet and a pair of German Marine Bridge binoculars "brought back by a British commando as a trophy c1946/7"

Hi every one

I have viewed this knife and it seems a nice condition one.

The estimate in my opinion is wildly low.....sometimes the scabbard alone will sell for the lower end of this estimate.

But you never know your luck. It will be very interesting to follow the results.

Good evening,

I participate at the auction and I won the 1st pattern knife :), I had been looking for one a long time. Far above reserve but still happy with price.

It belonged to Colour Sergeant Ron Muddimer of the Royal Marine Commandos 30 Assault Unit, this unit was headed by Ian Fleming.

Is there any more info on Ron Muddimer?

Hi I am happy to have received the 1st pattern FS now. Very happy with it:D Incredible how well balanced this knifes feel in the hand and beautifully made.

I have to do a further bit of research now as on the backside is written D. Nash (Gr). As mentioned the vendor son of Ron Muddimer 30 AU had stated the knife was of his father.

Any clue who D. Nash might be?

not the first time I have come across a knife that was used by more than one Commando. I used to own a First Pattern from a Seargent in No Commando, on the back of the scabbard was one other name and 'two' service numbers (not his). So I guess some of these knives got around
