Hi Andrew
I should explain that times have changed since then and what was considered a serious illness would be shrugged off today as a minor ailment! The 1940's saw advances in medicine that created significant reductions in diseases and other life threatening conditions.
For instance, the first drugs to combat tuberculosis were introduced, aiding the treatment of a disease known to cause so many unnecessary deaths. Penicillin too was discovered, and this pioneered the introduction of similar remedies for infections. The introduction of penicillin was truly groundbreaking in the field of preventative medicine.
Also, the Emergency Medical Service (aka Emergency Hospital Service) was set up at the outbreak of World War II. One of the challenges for the service was to deal with the 'normal' population of sick people while freeing-up capacity to deal mass casualties with injuries attributed to air raids or other attacks...
I have sent you a PM.
Nick
