Hi Simon,
Welcome to the CVA.
I cannot, at this time, offer you anything specific about your father but I would recommend that you apply to the MoD for his Service Record.
This will, at a cost of £30, provide you with a great deal of information including date of enlistment, training, postings, transfer to Commandos, wounds, hospitalization, promotions etc.
The fact that you know his parent regiment - Royal Engineers - and his Service Number set you off to a good start...

The above link will explain which forms to complete and where to send them - I am presuming that your father is no longer with us and that you are Next of Kin (or that you can obtain NoK's consent to search)?
In that case you'd need to fill in:
a. Request form for Service personnel details - next of kin form
b. Request form for Service personnel details - Army (Part 2)
I would also recommend that you send off the application as soon as possible as there is normally a fairly lengthy wait for the records - the office will explain this when it acknowledges your application.
If you have any difficulty with the forms please do not hesitate to ask for assistance, I will be only too pleased to help.
In the meantime my colleagues and I will endeavour to find out some information for you.
Nick
