Hello,
Just wondered if there may be anyone still alive who remembers my father from his Commando days?
He is Dickie Unwin, now in his early 90's.
He served with 3201 Servicing Commandos Squadron in Italy, Sicily and Tunisia during the 2nd World War.
His long term memory is not too bad, although short term is! He does enjoy chatting about his war time experiences and often wonders if any chums are still remaining.
Regards Jill

Hi Jill

I will firstly add a little information for the benefit of others about the RAF Servicing Commandos.
12 units were formed in the United Kingdom, together with a further 3 units in the Middle East. They comprised a total of some 2400 Officers, N.C.Os and other ranks, mostly volunteers, and all of them skilled tradesmen capable of working on all types of aircraft to keep them flying under all kinds of conditions. These Commando Units were trained on similar lines to the Army and Royal Marine Commandos. Their prime purpose was to accompany the invasion forces, either to make enemy airfields serviceable, or to make operational the new airstrips built by the Army Airfield Construction Units.

The above information comes from their own Association website which can be located on the link below. There you will see a list of members which include at least 2 from 3201.

I have no specific information about your father, and sadly we have very little information on the RAF Servicing Commandos. However I do think it would be worthwhile contacting the Association above. I hope someone else might have more information for you regarding those he served with.

Please feel free, if you wish, to attach to this forum thread any photo you may have of your father from his WW2 days in 3201 Servicng Commando

Regards

Pete
