Hi all

For any of you who have contacts in the world of medal and memorabilia collectors could you circulate this message from the daughter of the late Brigadier Denis O'Flaherty CBE DSO, formerly a Lieutenant with No.3 Commando. He stayed on in the Army in the Royal Artillery and at one point was OC 29 Commando.

I wonder whether you and your contacts could look out for my father's medals. The originals were stolen c.1990. In September the replacements, carefully assembled by his old comrades, were stolen from my 87 year old mother. The burglars also took the presentation commando dagger given to him following his command of 29 Commando at Plymounth in 1962/3.
The medals were mounted on a single bar including:
CBE, DSO, 1939-45 Star, Defence Medal,France and Germany star with mention in dispatches oak leaf, General Service Medal (Malaya), Korean War Medal, UN Medal (Korea), US Bronze Star and I think one more, but haven't quite tracked it down yet.

I thought you might also like to know what little I know about Vaagso. My understanding is that a machine gun was placed in an upper floor of the warehouse you mentioned, pinning down his men. He stormed up the stairs and managed to take out the post, but received 5 bullets in his face and head. One took out his eye and one side of his jaw, another shattered the atlas bone in his neck (the bone that holds your head up). As you say, he was in hospital/recovering for two years. They took out one of his ribs and put it in his neck. This later broke and had to be replaced with metal (I believe this happened when he was injured crossing the Rhine). He wore a black patch for the rest of his serving career. He was probably the only one eyed gunner in Korea.

Burglars have taken all my mother's momentoes of my father. If you do come across anything I would be very grateful if you could contact me.
Thank you and regards

If anyone is approached by someone trying to sell these items the Police should be informed

I have received further information from Marye Humphery, daughter of the late Brig. Denis O'Flaherty CBE DSO. She advises me that her mother is coping well after the shock of the burglary. She has also provided the Crime Reference number which is BY/13833/10 at Maidstone Police. Should anyone have information relating to this crime please contact Maidstone Police quoting that number. She has very kindly provided 2 additional pictures of her father which I have now placed in a personal album within the No.3 Commando gallery:
