What regiment was he commissioned into? Was it the Buffs or the Recce Regt RAC? When did he receive the MC?
best regards

Keith,
Have you tried searching the London Gazette to see when the MC was awarded?

Keith,
A quick search of the London Gazette showed up a few entries in answer to your queries.
Gazette issue 34883 dated 25 June 1940 shows 134120 B J Barton commisioned into The Buffs.
Gazette issue 35211 dated 4 July 1941 shows 134120 2nd Lt B J Barton (The Buffs) to 2nd Lt (retaining present seniority) wef 30 January 1941
Gazette issue 36138 dated 19 Aug 1943 shows 134120 Lt (acting Capt) B J Barton (Recconnaisance Corps - Hastings), MC wef 17 Aug 1943.
I hope this helps?

Thanks for the information Nick. He seems to have been an officer in both regiments before joining 2 Commando. I am assuming he enlisted in the Grenadier Guards and was recommended for a commission. I didn't realise he got a second DSO (presumably for an action with SOE).
best regards

Keith,
Don't forget that commandos were only 'on loan' from their parent regiments so that is why they are gazetted as being in whichever regiment.
