Hi all,
I need to find 'Elim Camp' that my Late Father was in around January 1946.

My sister has sent me some WW2 letters and the address on one of them is:
485 Flotilla
Elim Camp
c/o FMO Singapore
Malaya.

Dad was a Royal Navy Commando and around this time Mountbatten was in Singapore.

Any help welcome.

Regards

Hi Rick,
i've had a gander at a few old maps of Singapore and the closest i can put is in the Kallang Area which was, before the fall of Singapore in the Fortress area close to Singapore city itself but on the oposite side of the water. This would i imagine have been part of the Naval dockyard.
Hope this is of some use to you.
Regards,
Alan Orton.

Best I could do at the moment is finding an advert in a Singapore Paper - The Strait Times [June '46] which put Elim Camp near Pasir Ris area of Singapore...

I also found a photo of two Cameronians in Elim Camp but no details other than their names.

Rick

I had a quick look and found the photo Nick mentions of 2 guys taken at Elim Camp on this link 4th photo down. Will have more of a browse later. The first picture also shows Mountbatten in Singapore on an inspection

My feeling is that the Elim Camp was not a military establishment but quite possibly an evangelical Christian Missionary which was able to offer somewhere for war weary soldiers, sailors and airmen a place to relax, have a cup of tea and find solace.

Other similar 'bodies' included the Salvation Army, Y.M.C.A., the Church Army, Malcolm Clubs and Toc H.

Good thinking Nick. There is an Elim Church which has been in Singapore since 1928. The current building is located on the Serangoon Road not far from the Pasir Ris area you earlier mentioned. Rick, it might be worth contacting them to see if they can help. Here is a map where the white star on red background marks the location of the current church building:

In fact the second photo showing John Winn and his brother has the caption: John Winn and twin brother Bert, Upper Seragoon Road , Singapore...
