It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of yet another of our Commando Veterans and friends. Fred Mather, of No.2 Commando 4 Troop and later the Heavy Weapons Troop, had been in hospital recently, and when he came out he seemed to be on the mend. Sadly he was then diagnosed with Leukemia. Fred passed away at home with his family around him. His nephew Trevor in his email to me included this
Just to let you know Fred passed away this morning peacefully with family around him.Was talking to him on friday and although weak had lost non of his humour. it was an honour to have him as my uncle
Fred was in No.2 Commando alongside his brother Ernie during the war. There are many pictures of Fred and almost all, even those post war, have his brother alongside him. So I have posted one of those here where Fred and Ernie are alongside a friend and fellow Commando John Mavin. It would have been wrong to separate them
Pte John Mavin on the left, Pte Fred Mather, and his brother Pte Ernie Mather - 2 Cdo Jan. 42
I heard this saying " Commandos never die, they just go elsewhere and regroup". Well I like to think there will be a big reunion wherever they all are.
Rest in peace Fred

It is very sad news indeed. Through the CVA and Trevor Bob and Fred were able to reconnect for a little while. Fred was going to learn to use the computer so they could email back and forth (that didn't work out).
My love and prayers to Trevor and all the family. There is another big reunion happening.

Another very sad loss. A member of 4 Troop, No 2 Commando, Fred became a Warrany Officer First Class in the Royal Armoured Corps.
Our sincere condolences go to his son Trevor and his family.
God bless you Fred. Rest in peace.

Rest in Peace Grandad,
I am very proud to be a grandson to such a brave man! Once a trained fighting machine but also the most gentle man you could meet.
Will miss you lots
