It is with much sadness and regret that I announce the passing of Gaylord McCurdy of Golden Colarado USA on the 25th June 2010 after a long and bravely fought battle with cancer. Mac as he was known to his friends was one of the American volunteers with No.6 Commando during Operation Torch where he was wounded when the troop train that he was travelling in was straffed by two German aircraft, he was wounded two more times after this the last time being on D Day. After Operation Torch he returned to his unit with the American Army and was awarded the Silver Star for single handedly taking out a six strong enemy machine gun position during the allied advance in to Germany in 1945, I have attached a copy of the official citation that he received for this action.
My thoughts and sympathy go out to Mac and all of his family at this very sad time.

Andy

We have 2 pictures in the No.6 Commando album that Gaylord McCurdy or 'Mac' sent in to the CVA which I reproduce here. One he is named and is in the centre, the other - a group photo - I believe he is in the front row 3rd from the right.

Rest in peace Mac

Pete Rogers, son of LSgt Joe Rogers MM & nephew of TSM Ken McAllister. Both No2 Commando.
God and the Soldier, all men adore, In time of danger and not before.
When the danger is passed and all things righted, God is forgotten, and the Soldier slighted.
