The area to either side of Inverailort in Moidart was used extensively for Commando training, mostly from 1940 - 1942, after which time most Commando training went through Achnacarry.

Evidence of training can be found in various local sites. A glorious beach near Acharacle is still known as Commando Bay, used for beach assault and opposed landing training. It is littered to this day with .303 heads and shrapnel at surface level.

Some 4 - 5 miles West of Inverailort is an old house that is still locally known as Bomb Cottage.

There is extensive evidence of live ammo training inside and out, indicating use of .303 (Enfield or Bren), and automatic rounds from Sten and Thompson.

Apparently the roof was blown off in a set-up mortar attack demonstration for top brass.
A couple of mortars were trained on the house and fired.

They struck and the house (which was pre-packed with a fair amount of explosives) went up with an impressive boom!

Top brass were delighted and none the wiser

A couple of sections of bomb cottage are close to collapsing and no doubt soon shall. A few images from last weekends visit -
