Here is a photo taken in 2008 of Lancs Fusiliers - you'll see their yellow hackle and the dark general service beret - which can appear purple in some light...

Hello Nick
After months and months finally received dads service records. They said after several phone calls did not receive first form so had to reapply. Dad was with B Company No 2 Depot RAMC. Which ties in with knowing he was a medic. Looking at his service details it says BNAF - which i believe is British North Africa Force and also it mentions No. 9 Commandos - Afloat - several times and from 15 Sept - 23 Nov 1943 he was in Malta.
Thanks for your help
Nina

Hi Nina,
pleased to hear that you've got your father's service records back at last.
Now the real research can begin!!!
There is still the question of the yellow hackle...
Good luck, keep us informed and don't hesitate to ask any questions that may arise - we may not know all the answers but it's fun trying to find out!
And every bit of research seems to turn up another snippet of info that may be of use to someone else.
Regards,
Nick

might be worth having a look at Charles messengers book middle east commando, talks about commandos serving in Africa and their formations before reaching there.
