This link to the BBC WW2 People at War site relates to an American who wrote diary notes and letters about his service between January 1942 through to August 1943 prior to his death on the heights near Salerno on the 16th September 1943 near the Chiunzi Pass. They are transcribed by his nephew, Tom Lanagan. Sgt. Sullivan was with the 34th US Army Divn. and the 1st and 3rd US Ranger Divisions. It includes his training at Achnacarry and is a very worthwhile read of what life was like. At the end he makes a comment " You should hear these British. They?re swell fighters. If it has been very bloody and you ask how was it ? they?ll say ? ?It was a bit sticky for a while."
